Guest lecture on Japanese Philosophy and Religion

Prof. James Heisig will give a guest lecture on Japanese Philosophy and Religion, with special reference to the Kyoto School on 4th May, 2016. Place and time:  HIW, Room A, 2-4 pm.Professor Heisig is from the Nanzan Institute in Japan and he is very well known as a scholar of the Kyoto School, especially of Hajime Tanabe and Tanabe's important work, Philosophy as Metanoetics. He is the external examiner of the dissertation of Takeshi Morisato on 6 May, 11:00-13:00.

Doctoral Research Fellowship in Japanese Studies at the University of Oslo

A PhD Research Fellowship in Japanese Studies is available at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS), University of Oslo. IKOS seeks to recruit a PhD candidate with excellent research qualifications who will investigate issues of heritagisation in contemporary Japan. The successful applicant will address issues related to the project Sacred heritage? Secularisation, sacralisation and the production of heritage in contemporary Japan.

Helaas is de onlinecatalogus, Limo, momenteel niet meer te vertrouwen bij zoekopdrachten naar fysieke boeken in het Japans, Chinees en Koreaans. Ook het backoffice-systeem van de bibliotheek geeft te weinig resultaten. Indien je een boek in het Japans zoekt, gebruik je het best CiNii books met FA01851X als ‘Library ID’ of Belgium als ‘Area’.

Universiteit Gent, Blandijberg 2, vijfde verdieping, 9000 Genth 16:00Prof. Hoshino will talk on the sublime in Taishō period Japan and the related topic of the so-called Taisho Vitalism (大正生命主義). The lecture shall consider the influence and peculiar interpretation that Japanese intellectuals gave of a wider philosophical and scientific debate on evolution which included also European thinkers such as Bergson.Prof. Hoshino will focus in particular on Ōsugi Sakae (大杉栄), a prominent anarchist intellectual active in 1910s' and 10920s' Japan and tragically killed in 1923.
